The Elder Abuse Prevention Project has represented numerous individuals who have been targeted by lottery scams. Scammers are skilled at coming across as genuine in their initial solicitations, but increasingly use threatening and coercive tactics to lead elders to continue sending money as the scam goes on. The story provides fascinating insight into the devastating consequences of these scams in both the United States and Jamaica, including poverty, poor health outcomes and suicide. Drash describes the origins of the lottery scams as well as some of the steps Jamaican authorities and US courts are taking to combat the issue.
